| What is a Small Group and What Does it Do? |
| |
| A small group is a group of 5-10 like minded people who meet regularly,
in an informal setting, for the purpose of developing relationships;
growing in spiritual maturity; and for prayer.
Meetings often include Bible study and discussion, sharing, fellowship and prayer.
Members develop closer relationships as brothers and sisters in Christ,
helping and encouraging each other. |
| |
| Note that these are not "classes",
where you can just attend when you want to.
Rather, these are groups where members have made a commitment to each other to meet
regularly for mutual help and study. As a result, small groups help to meet the spiritual,
social and help needs of the members. They generally fall into one of several common categories:
|
| |
- Relational (the primary focus is on developing close relationships with
a few other Christians)
- Growth (the focus is on Christian growth and renewal)
- Support and recovery (as in helping with grief, addiction recovery, etc.)
- Service (the focus is on service for the church, i.e. school, outreach,
etc.). Other traditional service groups such as LLL, Ladies Aid, etc. also
help satisfy members needs for connections in the church.)
- Bible study groups
|
| |
| All such groups have the potential of becoming a
"church within the church" for the members, developing a deeper sense of community
and connection for the members. |
| |
| Groups meet when and as often as they want,
usually once or twice a month. (Note that groups with a relational or growth purpose
usually cannot meet those goals unless they meet at least twice a month.)
Meetings are most often held in private homes. Groups are usually formed by personal invitation,
driven by mutual interests or location. |
